• Coalition Letter to Leadership on HFC Phasedown

Letters
November 18, 2020

Dear Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader McConnell, Democratic Leader Schumer, and Republican Leader McCarthy: We write to request the swift passage of bipartisan legislation that would phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) before the end of this Congress. Phasing down HFCs and transitioning to next generation technologies protects the environment, advances U.S. technology leadership, and creates American jobs – goals we know you share.

Many of the next-generation technologies poised to replace HFCs are made in the United States, reflecting billions of dollars invested by American companies in innovation and R&D. Transitions in refrigerants have always been accompanied by significant improvements in the performance and reliability of equipment, such as air conditioners and refrigerators. New equipment is more energy efficient, saving consumers and business owners money on maintenance costs. Phasing down HFCs would increase job openings by 33,000, grow U.S. exports by $5 billion, and reduce imports by nearly $7 billion by 2027. Additionally, this action would avoid more than 70 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 2050.
