Natural gas delivers affordable and clean energy to thousands of communities across Washington state. From the cities encompassing the Puget Sound to the mountainous regions of eastern Washington, natural gas heats homes, powers businesses, and keeps energy costs low.
Over 120,000 businesses in Washington rely on natural gas. Since 2010, natural gas use by Washington businesses has grown 7% and commercial natural gas prices have declined 16%. The natural gas industry supports over 64,000 jobs in the state.
Between 2009 and 2019, natural gas use in the electric industry increased by more than 30%. Over that period:
CO2 emissions from conventional and combined-heat-and-power plants declined 24%,
SO2 emissions from conventional and combined-heat-and-power plants declined 78%,
NOx emissions from conventional and combined-heat-and-power plants declined 44%.
