Thomas Donohue told North Dakota to “do what you’re doing.”

In a trip to the state Thursday, Donohue, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, cited North Dakota’s No. 1 ranking in job, economic and per capita income growth as evidence of the state’s successful legislative policies.

“North Dakota is setting the tone for solving America’s problems,” Donohue said.

The state has a $1.6 billion surplus and more than $7 million from oil taxes in its Legacy Fund.

Donohue was in North Dakota to highlight the state’s multiple sources of energy as possible ways to solve the nation’s deficit issues. He met with Gov. Jack Dalrymple as well as members of the energy industry.

Donohue said he was unable to travel to the Bakken oil field or any of the state’s other energy facilities, but promised to come back in the fall.
