PARTNERSHIP STATEMENT ON THE ARENA ACT

Broad Coalition of Business and Consumer Groups Support Legislation to Enhance Regulatory Certainty and States Rights in Critical Decisions Impacting Energy Prices

Washington, D.C., May 13, 2015 – The co-chairs of the Partnership for a Better Energy Future issued the following statement today in support of bipartisan legislation that would give states a greater say in EPA regulations impacting electricity rates.  The Affordable Reliable Electricity Now Act of 2015 (ARENA Act) was introduced today by a group of bipartisan Senators including, Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Roy Blunt (R-MO), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Steve Daines (R-MT), John Thune (R-SD) and John Hoeven (R-ND):

Ross Eisenberg, Vice President of Energy and Resource Policy, National Association of Manufacturers:

“In its carbon regulations for new and existing power plants, the EPA is attempting  to remake our country’s energy mix by dictating which fuels we can use to provide power to our homes and businesses while spreading hundreds of billions of dollars of additional costs to all energy consumers.  The ARENA Act would provide some much needed balance and certainty for state governments and businesses.”

Dan Byers, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for 21st Century Energy:

“More than 30 states have raised serious objections to EPA’s power plant regulations for a variety of reasons.  The ARENA Act gives states a greater say in how and if policies are adopted that impact electricity rates, and ensures that carbon capture and sequestration is truly commercially viable before its use can be required.”

The Partnership urges strong support for this critical legislation to keep energy diverse, affordable and reliable, and looks forward to working with all U.S. Senators as it advances.
